The Big Blue

We're big fans of freediving so we were very excited back when we first heard this semi-autobiographical account of the life of legendary French freediver Jacques Mayol and rival Italian freediver Enzo Molinari was being made.

Wow, were we ever disappointed! This is a terrible movie. Mayol always thought of himself as something of a freediving philosopher (he once said that cosmic cogs turn when you hold your breath) but he pushes the zen-thing to ridiculously boring limits here. Kwai Chang Caine he ain't.

Rosanna Arquette stars as his love interest, playing a woman strangely attracted to extremely boring men. Molinari is far and away the most interesting character in the story even though he's portrayed in a negative light. We had to laugh when we read an interview with Mayol in which he expressed surprise that his "old friend" was angry with him after seeing the movie.

There's very little diving here and virtually no reason to waste your time with this movie.
